Before we ever left the dock Russ took the time to ensure that we knew what to do and how to do it in order to have a successful day. Russ knew right where all of the good fishing spots were and there wasn't a moment wasted on our trip. We caught the biggest fish that I had ever seen that was not in the Virginia Aquarium (48'' Citation Red Drum approx 65lbs). The water was a little rough, but Russ is a seasoned Captain and I never had to worry a minute. Can't wait for the Striper to start schooling so that I can go out with Russ again. The first 3 fishing spots he took us to we were catching lots of fish, but unfortunately no keepers. Despite the fact that we had already been out for nearly our entire allotted time, Captain Russ took us to yet another spot to continue fishing. Russ would not take us back to the dock until we had caught enough Croakers for my family of five to enjoy a wonderful fish dinner. Thanks again and keep on keeping on."

Upon arrival, I was met with the most safe and secure feeling of comfort that one rarely experiences in meeting a stranger - he was warm and inviting and I could sense that this was only the beginning of an INCREDIBLE trip! Before left the dock and headed to the marina store for fuel - he pulled out a bag of fresh, hand picked blueberries (that he picked himself) and said, "I brought some nice blueberries for us today!", as he began answering all of our questions and beginning some of the best fish stories I have ever heard. Once we fueled up and picked up some bait - we were off into the sea with only the beautiful, blue sky and glistening water to think about! On top of the boat being just perfect, the conversation was even more perfect and the fishing experience was immeasurable! I could not help but to continuously thank the Captain for helping in the creation of my "perfect day on the water"!! His knowledge of fishing and all it entails was colossal - enabling me to catch fish I had never seen before!!! I was amazed at what I was pulling out of the water and even when I wasn't able to master the flounder fishing technique (losing some of his tackle and bait - twice!!!!!) he was patient and forgiving....he even moved us to another spot just so I could fish through a technique I was good at!!!!! The dedication that Russ Gottwald demonstrated on our trip was impressive - "neva-quitting" when he knew we were enjoying ourselves to the fullest! He made it clear that our enjoyment was top priority for him. By the end of the day, I felt like I had known The Captain for years... I hated to say goodbye! He, truly, is one of the most extraordinary and enjoyable people I have ever met - I would not trust anyone else with my fishing desires - EVER!!!!!!!! This experience made for the best birthday I have ever had! I emailed Captain Gottwald, inquiring about a day on the bay and he immediately called me back. The turnaround was quite impressive. We were able to book out trip 4 days in advance; we were reeled in without a fight!  We met Captain Gottwald at his vessel on Saturday afternoon. We knew the moment we saw him he had a love for the bay and we were about to have an adventure with an EXPERIENCED angler.  C Not only did he provide all the equipment, bait, life vests and all the other material necessities; He came with his robust personality and as a result we were able to laugh and learn hands on from a master. We learned many of the fishing nuisances, styles and techniques only a seasoned veteran could share. This was p...riceless. He has been on the water since age 2, giving my family a Huge level of comfort with him. My 10 year old daughter caught 27, yes that's right... TWENTY SEVEN Croaker fish which was perfect for her... (Although we have not heard the end of it..!!) And there were moments when one would have thought SHE was the Captain's child based on his caring attitude towards her. THANK YOU CAPTAIN GOTTWALD for making our Charter day one to remember. You were awesome; we love you and your boat (particularly the boat!!!) Thanks again for the  marvelous, magical day on the bay! Even though the rockfish didn't cooperate (it was like that all day everywhere according to the radio) he NEVAQUIT looking and working hard to find them. Captain Russ always seems to find the stripers and I mean the big ones. We have fished with jigs, trolling with lures and also live eels. He always seems to know the best method to fish on any given day. Stripers are not the only thing we have fished for. You can add flounder, blue fish, cobia and more to the list of fish verities we have landed. His boat is in great condition and equipped with the best electronics and safety equipment. A big plus is the enclosed cabin that is heated. When fishing for stripers in the fall you can expect cold weather. The heated cabin has plenty of room and helps keep you warm. I highly recommend Captain Russ. I cannot remember the last time we came in without some fish."

I have caught spade fish, speckled trout and stripers with him. He has a very comfortable boat and is knowledgeable and fun to fish with."

• Scott H of Richmond, VA  Nov 13, 2009 wrote "I took my son-in-law striper fishing with Capt Russ at the CBBT. We fished the High Rise channel on an outgoing tide. This is one of the best spots for trophy stripers. Capt Russ had us rigged up with live eels drifting at various depths. My son-in-law Matthew got a screamer hit (took half the line on the reel) before he got control. Capt Russ coached him well, and Matthew ended up landing his largest fish ever! It weighed in at 36+ lbs. We had a great day, and Capt Russ' techniques with eels are definitely the best for jumbo fish. I also had the opportunity to also go out on a night fishing eeling trip with Capt Russ (also around the CBBT High Rise) – awesome night – lots of boats, lots of big fish. We ended up with our limit of 40+ lb fish, and we threw a number of large fish back for another day. This is an incredible way to fish for and catch trophy stripers – I highly recommend trying this with Capt Russ! Another key part of the winter & night fishing experience is having a great boat and warm cabin – the boat “Obsessed” definitely has this covered – lights, warmth, music, good company and a great fishing time! We've fished for strippers, flounder, sea trout, spade fish, blue fish, cobia and some incredible shark fishing (by accident)! He knows the waters and the methods to catch fish any time of the year. I'm always comfortable with him at the helm in any weather and water condition. My family loves fresh fish and I can always count on bringing home a cooler full for their enjoyment. Capt.
